The Misgeld lab uses in vivo imaging methods (ranging from wide-field time-lapse to two-photon microscopy) to study the development and degeneration of neurons and their processes. Specifically we are interested in how neurons use their own cell biological machinery – such as axonal transport – to maintain homeostasis in conditions of developmental remodeling or disease-related stress. At the same time, we try to understand how this intrinsic regulation is integrated with the support by glial cells that surround every axon and synapse. The models we use are transgenic mice that express fluorescent proteins in cells and organelles of the nervous system. Additionally, a second team in the lab (Godinho) has added zebrafish to our technical spectrum, a species that is particularly suitable for in vivo imaging. Projects will focus on time-lapse recordings of neuronal and glial behaviour either during development or in spinal cord pathologies, such as trauma or neuroinflammation.
