Research Focus

We are interested in establishing optical techniques that will allow the control of neuronal excitability by light. This shall be achieved by small organic molecules acting as photo-switchable ligands and blockers for ion channels, i.e. their activity can be quickly switched on or off by light of different wavelengths. We intend to make this optical technique available for utilisation in the mammalian brain stem and focus upon various nuclei involved in processing auditory information (esp. localisation of sound sources). By applying the method we will study connectivity in auditory brain stem circuits and control neuronal activity with physiologically relevant high firing rates. We aim at establishing the method in vitro (whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in acute brain stem slices) and at transferring it to in vivo experiments.
