Research Focus

The group of Prof. Herz uses methods from nonlinear dynamics and probability theory to analyze and model electrophysiological data, which is partly recorded in his own lab (and partly by collaborators) to compare them with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, new techniques are developed to integrate real-time data analysis methods into neurobiological experiments. Research areas include mechanosensory transduction, synaptic transmission, optimality and adaptation of sensory systems, acoustic communication, interaction of cell-intrinsic rhythms and large-scale oscillations as well as collective properties of neuronal networks.

Primary Technique(s): nonlinear dynamics, probability theory, theoretical biophysics

Model Organism(s): Computational and mathematical models of insect auditory and olfactory systems, and rodent entorhinal cortex and hippocampus.
