Research Focus

The Bio-Inspired Information Processing group of Prof. Hemmert is located at the Technische Universität München (TUM) and is part of the Munich Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience.  We focus our research on the auditory system where we combine modelling studies with experiments.

Modelling:

- Auditory sound processing

- Automatic speech recognition

- Electrical stimulation of neurons

- Coding strategies for cochlear implants

Experimental:

- Psycho-“acoustical” investigations on patients with cochlear implants

- Electrical- and optical stimulation of neurons cultured on multi-electrode arrays

Technical applications of our research include cochlear implants and conventional hearing aids.

Primary Technique(s): computational models of spiking neuronal networks, modelling of sensory organs and neurons, hearing implants (novel coding strategies, electrical and optical stimulation), information theory, automatic speech recognition using bio-inspired algorithms, biophysics

Model Organism(s): human auditory system neurons from mouse/rat forebrain cultured on multi-electrode arrays
